Flash in web sites – How to maximize benefits Back to articles home

If you want to create an impression from a graphical point of view, employing flash is an ideal approach. But Flash needs to be used effectively and for the right type of audience to maximize its benefits. Read on to find out more…

How to use Flash judiciously:
The popularity of Flash has escalated ever since its introduction in 1996. It adds animation and interactivity to web pages. Flash is used to create advertisements, web pages, online presentations, a more effective substitute to Power Point, etc.

Flash provides a number of benefits:

  1. Flash provides a splendid experience to the visitors. It captures the viewer’s imagination and can make a compelling case to convey a marketing message efficiently.

  2. It is relatively easy to create and view animations in Flash.

  3. It is convenient to watch videos in Flash applications as it doesn't require an OS-dependent plug-in like QuickTime or Media Player.

  4. Flash enables web developers to create vector graphics that look more attractive.

  5. Since Flash lets you inter-play graphics and sounds, it becomes easier to explain difficult concepts through appealing tutorials, training courses, introductions, and film clips.

  6. Flash offers countless website design options.

  7. A vast number of web users now have the Flash player installed on their computers. So if you build a site in Flash, it can be viewed by the vast majority of people and if not, Adobe offers a free Flash plug-in that takes seconds to install.
Flash undoubtedly makes the webpage look more striking, but it doesn't necessarily increase online sales or raise traffic. Some sites are best presented with Flash while others are not.

Whether Flash should be used depends upon the target audience. If the website is about a design company, online gaming, architects, photographers or some youth oriented site, then the use of Flash is clearly beneficial to attract visitors. But if the site focuses on something like Life Insurance, then it’s best not to incorporate too many Flash elements into the site.

However, touches of Flash can be useful for corporate, retail, informational and many other types of websites if they are created to enhance the static design. But there are certain areas that need particular attention.

Considerations:

  1. The optimization strategies are similar for Flash websites as they are for static ones - create descriptive page titles and Meta descriptions for each page for optimization.

  2. Try to use regular text links on the page and embed the Flash into the html pages.

  3. Use a short Flash intro especially if it can present the company’s profile or the entire range of products better than a static page. Flash intros are especially effective at setting the tone of the website.
  4. People want quality information, and they want it fast without having to think. If they find information quickly, they go further; else they impatiently move on to another website. Creating a sitemap in a website removes a lot of frustration.

A site map helps the visitor to quickly navigate the page directly from the sitemap instead of searching the entire site. A site map carries links to all web pages. Submission of the site map to the search engine ensures that all web pages are indexed by the search engine.

So whether you are making a complete Flash based website or using some of the Flash components in a static site; if used effectively, it can definitely increase your page views and customers.
